Four current Tanita choices for UK home users

The important split is not simply cheap versus expensive. BC-401 and RD-953 are platform models with app connectivity. BC-545N adds hand electrodes for segmental arm, leg and trunk estimates but is not listed on Tanita’s current MyTANITA compatibility page. RD-545HR combines segmental hand-and-foot measurement with Bluetooth and its documented heart-rate function.

Prices and stock are observations, not promises. Fitshop’s RD-545HR product page said pre-order while its Tanita category page showed the model in stock on the same access date. That conflict is a reason to confirm availability with the seller, not to silently select the more convenient status. Delivery, finance, warranty value and retailer superiority are outside this comparison.

BC-401: the lower-cost connected platform

The current Tanita BC-401 page identifies it as a connected home body-analysis scale. Its exact instruction manual documents Bluetooth Low Energy, five personal memories and platform measurement rather than a handgrip. Tanita’s support list also names BC-401 as compatible with the MyTANITA app.

This is the logical first shortlist for someone who wants automatic history at the lowest observed price of these four and does not need separate arm, leg and trunk estimates. “Entry point” does not mean medically basic or clinically sufficient: the composition fields remain BIA estimates. The app also adds setup and privacy considerations that a purely on-device workflow avoids.

RD-953: connected tracking without hand electrodes

The RD-953 manual documents dual-frequency platform BIA, Bluetooth Low Energy, four personal memories and a 200 kg weight capacity. Its result sequence includes weight and algorithmic fields such as body-fat percentage, muscle mass, muscle-quality score, visceral-fat rating, body water, basal metabolic rate, metabolic age, physique rating, bone-mass estimate and BMI.

Choose it over BC-401 only when those documented RD-series fields or its interface justify the price difference for your use. It is not segmental: there are no hand electrodes to produce separate limb and trunk estimates. “Bone mass” on the display is an estimate, not a bone-density scan, and no field should be used to diagnose a condition.

BC-545N: segmental results without app dependence

The BC-545N model page and Tanita’s exact profile instructions describe a handle used with the platform, five user memories and measurements taken with bare feet and hands. Its segmental route estimates fat percentage and muscle mass separately for the arms, legs and trunk, with results available on the device.

This model suits someone with a defined reason to compare body-part estimates but no requirement for automatic app history. Tanita’s app compatibility article, modified 18 February 2025, does not list BC-545N. That absence should be treated as a current compatibility boundary, not proof about every historic app or regional variant. Confirm the full suffix and supplied manual.

RD-545HR: connected and segmental

The RD-545HR manual documents dual-frequency BIA, hand and foot electrodes, Bluetooth Low Energy, four personal memories, total and segmental fat and muscle fields, muscle-quality fields and a heart-rate function. It also documents setup through MyTANITA.

Shortlist it only if both connection and segmental output have a real job. Paying more does not establish closer agreement with DEXA, better long-term health or a universally more useful result. The retailer’s same-day pre-order status also makes lead time a separate purchase question.

Do app connectivity and segmental measurement solve different jobs?

Yes. App connectivity moves readings into a history and may make trend review easier, but it requires a compatible phone, current app support, an account and a privacy decision. Tanita’s current compatibility page names BC-401 and RD-953, alongside RD-545, BC-333LE and an iPhone-only RD-901 entry. The RD-545HR manual separately documents current MyTANITA setup. Check both the exact model suffix and current phone requirements.

Segmental measurement uses hand and foot contact to estimate body sections rather than extrapolating only from a platform route. That can make the output more relevant to someone comparing left/right or upper/lower training patterns, but it adds handling steps and more estimated fields. It does not turn a consumer scale into a diagnosis or guarantee agreement with a clinical reference.

What accuracy can this comparison responsibly claim?

No universal percentage. A peer-reviewed study of fifteen BIA devices found that high repeatability can coexist with widely varying validity. Device configuration, population and endpoint matter. Results cannot be transferred to one of these four models unless the exact model and relevant study conditions match.

A separate smart-scale study compared three non-Tanita models with DEXA. Their weight readings were reasonably accurate in that sample, while body-composition agreement was poor; the authors said smart-scale composition should not replace DEXA in patient care. It would be wrong to convert those errors into a Tanita accuracy figure or claim that one model here was tested.

For comparable home observations, NHS England advises using the same scales in the same location, on a firm level floor, at a consistent time and with similar clothing, while keeping still until weight settles. Recent fluid intake can also confound BIA-derived composition values: an 18-person randomised crossover pilot found changes after fluid intake and emphasised standardised pre-measurement conditions. Safety and interpretation limits

The BC-401, RD-953 and RD-545HR manuals state that people with pacemakers or other electronic medical implants must not use the body-composition function because the low-level signal could interfere with the implant. They say pregnant users should use weight only and that the other functions are not intended for pregnancy. Check the supplied manual for the exact model and do not substitute this article for medical clearance.

Scale-generated BMI is also limited. The NHS says BMI is one measure, cannot distinguish muscle from fat and must not be used to diagnose symptoms. Treat body-fat, muscle, water, visceral-fat, metabolic-age, muscle-quality and bone-mass fields as model-generated estimates. If a result raises a health concern, discuss the concern with a pharmacist, GP or another appropriate professional rather than adjusting treatment from a scale reading.

A practical shortlist in five steps

  1. Define the job: decide whether you need weight history, non-segmental estimates, limb-and-trunk estimates or the RD-545HR heart-rate field.
  2. Choose the workflow: app history points to BC-401, RD-953 or RD-545HR; on-device segmental use points to BC-545N.
  3. Check safety: read the exact manual’s implant, pregnancy, age, floor, contact and maximum-weight boundaries.
  4. Verify the suffix: do not transfer memory, capacity, connectivity or metric counts between RD-545, RD-545HR, BC-545 and BC-545N.
